ICP: it is with deep regret that we announce the passing of ICP324, Mike Lanning. Mike was found deceased in his apartment over the weekend. Cause of death is not known at this time. Mike Lanning was a valuable member of the ICP team and was an avid Wildlands Fire listener and Wildlands Medic. He will be missed for his paging efforts and great team spirit. [ICP-AZ,963]

Message from Kim with California Disasters:

It is with great sadness and emptiness of heart that I announce the sudden and untimely death of moderator Mike Lanning.

He was found dead by a neighbor in his Phoenix-area apartment a day or two ago and appears to have died over the holiday weekend.

Some of you here might be familiar with him by his name or by his handle "CWZWILDFIRE" which often appeared with frequent and informative postings on various fire and scanner related groups from the Hotlist on Wildlandfire.com to the ICP incident alert service in Arizona to Southwest Scanner on Yahoo Groups to even here on occasion when he had some bit of information or an angle on something the rest of us did not that enhanced the conversation thread and made this group all the better for his being here.

Mike will be sorely missed, indeed he already is missed. His last posting anywhere was on July 2nd and given his prolific posting pattern, that four day span of no posts by him is a disquieting silence on groups like Southwest Scanner.

Most importantly, Mike was a wonderful human being with a heart of gold and a sweetness of spirit. Speaking for myself for whom Mike was a friend, I feel kicked in the stomach by this news and at times when I think about it I feel like crying and I'm no sissy la-la.

I'm still sitting here in shock after that phone call yesterday afternoon from Mikes sister Gale from his cell phone. Mike and I were very close since I joined ICP. As matter of fact when Mike was living in Paulden we use to get together just to shoot the breeze about Public Safety etc. As you seen in the past a vast majority of the time on our ICP wildland fire notification pages it was 75% joint ICP004 & 324. Mike and I have been in almost daily contact especially during this current fire season.

I was swamp yesterday with e-mails after I made the notification about Mike on the various yahoo groups and websites. I like to thank Roy 963 for picking up the slack on yahoo groups and this website that I forgot to notify about Mike.

I have lost more then a great friend and asset I lost a BROTHER!

Memorial of Mike on the Wildland Fire forum:

http://www.wildlandfire.com/hotlist/showthread.php?t=14431

It is with great sadness that I sit here tonight and inform you that Mike Lanning, CWZWildfire, has passed.

Mike, a Senior Member, has been the backbone of posting in the SW Forum since 2007 and even more so since the passing of NMAirBear last year. His information was always prompt and accurate as was shown in the 2009 IA Thread Post Poll where you, his peers, voted him 2nd, only behind the late NMAirBear.

Mike was a paid on call firefighter for a small fire district in the Prescott area of Arizona and has been involved in the fire service for over 20 years. He leaves behind two children, ages 12 and 13. He loved to fish and was always talking about his family including his sister, Gail, her children, and his mother who live in the Mesa area. He made frequent visits to the valley after his father, a retired Payson, AZ Police Officer, passed away a few months ago.

Arrangements have been made and are to take place Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at 11:00 am at Melchor Mortuary in Mesa, Az. Additional information will follow. In leiu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to a fund established for his children. Information regarding the fund will follow.

The southwest area now has a void. Many may try but none will be able to fill the legacy that Mike Lanning, CWZWildfire left on this site in the Southwest Area Forums.

God rest your soul and rest in peace,

TFDFF

I have been waiting on the photos that I asked for about a week ago to put on the website for a memorial but have not received any except from Bill 004, some others were suppose to be emailed to me but as of yet I still have not received them.

Since I have not received the others, will put the only one that I have up with the memorial and info that I have this evening.
